It’s Dannii here from the Art by Marlene promo team for Art Foamies.
Today I wanted to bring you a fun tutorial on creating a cover for an altered art journal using art foamies to decorate.
The first step is to select your altered books to cover. Once you have made your selection lay your books down onto a piece of calico and decide the size required, and if you would like a flap on your closure.
Then simply trim the calico to size leaving it a little bigger then the book as the calico will shrink.
Give the calico 2 coats of gesso drying in between each coat.
Then once the calico is dry select a few sheets of art by Marlene collage papers and tear them up into smaller pieces. Gluing them down with Matt medium until the calico is covered.
Dry with a heat tool until completely dried.
Select 3-5 colours of acrylic paint and brush on top of the collage paper making sure you have an even distribution of colours across the calico.
Now the fun part begins using a gelli plate brayer your chosen colours down and choose a selection of Art Foamies. Stamp onto your calico using a different paint colour with each art foamie design
Once the calico is decorated with your art foamies. Use paint pens and ink markers to trace around and highlight the stamped images. Then dry with a heat tool .
Once completely dry flip the calico over and lay the book down and mark the size and position of the book with a pencil.
Using a hole punch, punch a hole in the spine and trim the excess calico close to the drawn line and round the edges of the flap.
Then using ribbon or in my case painted calico strips that are long enough to wrap around the book a couple of times. Thread the ribbon through the hole leaving a small tail of approx 3-5cm
Add a second hole punch next to the first and thread your second ribbon through the hole leaving a small tail. Then flatten the tails to either side of the spine.
Using a strong tacky white glue cover the inside of the calico within the pencil lines avoiding any glue on the flap.
Place your book cover down onto the glued area and wrap the internal book pages with grease proof paper to avoid any excess glue getting onto the book pages.
Now smooth the calico onto the cover using your palm or brayer pressing firmly to avoid any air bubbles and not forgetting the spine of the book. Making sure you have great adhesion to the cover and wiping off any excess glue around the edges.
Put the book aside to dry completely.
Once the cover is dried select your focal art foamies and load your gelli plate with black paint. Stamp your focal onto the front cover I used Art by Marlene flower trio for the focal.
Using the art by Marlene alphabet soup stamp out your text on the front cover, then dry with a heat tool.
Using paint pens out line and highlight the stamped images
Then to finish the project off use a make-up sponge and edge the cover with black paint.
And that’s it a wonderful decorated art foamie cover on your new art journal
