I am a real fan of using deli paper in my mixed media art! It has a wonderful way of just “melting” into the background of your piece when it is used as a collage component.
If you haven’t tried deli paper it is much like tissue paper, except that it has a slightly waxy finish on one side. You can find it at restaurant supply stores, some grocery stores and, of course, online. And it is a match made in heaven, in my opinion, when paired with my ART FOAMIES! Let me show you what I mean.
I often use deli paper as my “palette paper” when I am doing gel printing/monoprinting. It’s great for this purpose as I can wipe off my brayer on the deli paper between layers of paint. I am always surprised at how great some of these “deli prints” turn out, with no effort on my part.
Using some black acrylic paint, a brayer and some leafy ART FOAMIES, I stamped over the painted side of the deli paper with great results! I then cut out the leaves, sometimes on the outside of the stamped image in order to have more color showing, and sometimes along the edge of the stamped image.
The next image shows an incomplete art journal page. I had already done a grungy background and then added a small collage piece I had made many years ago and found again only recently. Since it didn’t have a home, I thought I’d add it to a journal page already in the works.
I wanted to add some thing to the journal page to tie the background to the added collage and make it more cohesive. I felt it just needed a little something more. That’s where the leaves come in! I placed them on the page in a way I felt integrated the overall piece better.
Because deli paper is very lightweight, it was easy to glue the leaves in place with just a glue stick, but you could also use matte medium.
I love how the deli paper almost “melts” into the background, giving the impression that it’s been there all along, rather being added as a collage element afterward. And if I added a coat of matte medium OVER the leaves, they’d “melt” even further into the background. Isn’t this a great look?
The bold, crisp print of the ART FOAMIES stamps really works well with deli paper and I am definitely going to be using my ART FOAMIES in more projects like this one.
